Welcome to our site, “Sharing is Caring”

“Chan family history, yesterday, today and tomorrow now has a home.”

Sharing is Caring; the Chan Family Story Matters.

The Chan family website is your a to share your piece of the Chan family journey. We can now easily curate our family history and nurture our family’s future, in one place. This site is for your heritage and it was built as a gift by Carolyn and Lindsy for our Chan family.

Welcome! You are on the home page of our site. The site has four main menu links at the top of the page. The menu choices are:

  1. Welcome “Sharing is Caring” (You are currently on this home page) which gives an overview of our site.
  2. Discussion Forum. You start here to register and log in. It is also our discussion forum page with many categories. The forum allows group discussion and voting (thumbs up or down). You select a category and then post your comments. You can request a new category any time.
  3. Published Journal Posts. Published journal posts are like online journals. This page allows you to read other’s posts and comment on them.
  4. Create and submit a journal post. This is the page where you create journal posts.

After you register (on Discussion Forum), you start out as a subscriber and can read and comment on content throughout our site. If you do not register you can not see the full site content. To create content, let Carolyn or Lindsy know to upgrade your profile to contributor. When you are a contributor you can create and edit your own new content for the site. We implement 2 user levels to allow better performance and security for the site.

You might wonder, “Why not use Facebook?” The answer is, Facebook owns your content, they sell your content. They do not secure your content from others and they are not designed to flow categories and topics the way this site does. Facebook also inserts pop-ups, redirects and other things we do not want. On Chanclan.net, we own the site and can hand it off to future generations. You can also tell us what you want in the design. Facebook may not appreciate your categories and topics and is unlikely to listen to you.

The Forum is for threaded discussion with voting and the posting section is where you can journal about topics you would like to share. Both sections allow you to include a single image when you post. Once you are registered, you can subsequently login thereafter. Some actions may require you to get the site administrator (Lindsy) involved. These would be things such as new categories or sections which impact site design, complicated linking to your picture site (if you like), image compression, document attachment etc. We can create topics and categories that you feel are important, just let us know.

Topics and categories could include: places, (China, SF Chinatown, Vietnam, Hon Kong), dates, family groups (Helen, Stan, Marian, Carolyn, Peter etc…) or any other subjects you may suggest that are of interest to the entire family. We already have a category for questions and answer submission. When someone has a question, we hope other site members will step up to research the question for the entire family. This could include questions like, “Who is in this picture? Where was it taken? When and by whom?” This site can help answer questions you may wonder about, but have no other way to research on your own. For example, do you know what Lily’s maiden name is and how to write it or what it means? Do you know the family’s history in Vietnam? Did you know Gung Gung’s Mother was Catholic?

Content contributors are able to post new blog content in their category so that others can help help them expand their research. Because anyone can add comments throughout the site we can all help improve the accuracy of our content through those comments. The site could allow us to do things such as:

  • Research questions before those who know the answers with are gone.
  • Share important news about your family group: marriages, birth’s, graduations, promotions, new enterprises (Please note we don’t want to replace Facebook. This is really just for significant landmark family stuff, not the world of trivia for friends and associates. Please try not to share things like new clothes, what you had for breakfast, favorite watches, new cars or your dog’s new tricks).
  • Update family growth and work on our family tree (which we have started on another site, so that we can all work on it dynamically together).
  • Share memories of special Chan family events like our Alaska cruise. Does anyone have the poem Uncle Peter wrote? We would love to post that poem.
  • Share historic pictures and documents (let us know and we can post them on the site).
  • Work together on special projects that are important to the family.
  • Share stories and moments that few know about, special lessons, moments of kindness, etc…
  • Share family military and professional titles like, Doctors, Lawyers, Generals, CXX executives in Fortune 500 companies (things to inspire future generations).

This is a virtual family gathering place that you can come to any time you like. You can visit on your phone, your tablet or you computer 24×7. This is also a place where we can come together to record and discuss what is important to us, along our way. It is important that everyone can experience and be active in our journey if they desire to do so. Too many families lack the ability to be inclusive and unified. This is a place where everyone has a voice.

Sharing our story matters and we should preserve for it for future generations. The Chan family has a diverse and complex background which no one person knows. Working together we can more easily record the many interesting aspects of the family history. It is important that our story is not lost and we work together to preserve it. Eventually we hope to pass this site on to future generations as the years go by so that it never goes away. This can be a perpetual record if we all work together.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow are all important aspects to be shared and valued. Together we can discover, share, and be part of building the Chan story for future generations to experience. Hopes, dreams, goals and accomplishments of a family become the historical record for the family. Please register, jump in, enjoy and contribute.

God’s Blessings and Love from the Strait members of the Chan family.
